When trying to build muscle, is soda bad for you?
Are diet soda drinks really any healthier than the regular
sugary counterparts?
According to Michael Jacobson, PhD. "not particularly."
Dr. Jacobson, executive directory of the Center for Science
in Public Interest says "A can of diet soda doesn't contain
10 teaspoons of sugar, but it has its own problems:
caffeine, which is a mildly addictive substance; acids that
promote dental erosion; and artificial sweeteners, which
raise some small safety questions."
Diet soda may not even fend off weight gain! A study at
the University of Texas Health Science Center, examined
data from a San Antonio Heart Study, a 25 year look at
health habits and found that people who drank diet soda
were at a greater risk for becoming overweight.
Other more recent studies have linked a higher chance of
obesity to diet soda drinking.
A recent animal study by scientists at Purdue University
concluded that artificial sweeteners can interfere with the
body's ability to regulate calorie intake. This could mean
that people who consume more artificial sweeteners are more
likely to overindulge.
When it comes to bone health, diet drinks are just as bad
as the sugar ones. Most diet drinkers substitute a diet
soda instead of milk for example; thus they reduce the
overall calcium they intake for healthy bones.
Poonam Jain, directory of community dentistry at Southern
Illinois University School of Dental Medicine says "there's
a myth that diet sofa is okay because it's not sugary." In
fact, diet soda drinks were nearly as acidic as regular;
thus it can erode tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay.
So what's the safest thing you can do?
1- Reduce the amount of diet soda you drink
2- Switch to the healthiest diet drink of all: water
The insulin spikes you might experience would not be beneficial to building muscle as it could put you into a more fat storage mode vs. protein synthesis and fat burning mode.
If you do drink soda, do so in moderation and/or infrequently and you'll be fine.
