Is a Weight Gainer Bad for You?

Question:  Marc, I've been told that I need a LOT of calories to gain weight.  I'm having a bit of an issue eating so much food.  My trainer recommended a weight gainer.  But are weight gainers bad for you?  What's your take on weight gainers for people who need those extra calories? Answer:  The quick answer is "A weight gainer isn't bad for you" than any other type of protein powder.  It all depends on the types of protein, the quality of the calories and how you end up using it.  If you search around on the Internet, you'd think you...

If You Don’t Track Your Diet… You Are Wasting Your Time

Frankly, I'm puzzled whenever I hear this from somebody who's frustrated with their lack of gains: Me: So what are you eating? How many calories per day and how many do you need? Them: I don't know. I just eat. Huh? Yes, it's true. People don't track their diets, don't calculate their calories and just guess at what they need. They have no idea where they are going, very little facts on how to get there and yet are frustrated and mad when 6 weeks later they don't see the results. Imagine, for a moment, that's it's 6-months from today. And you've made no progress....

How One Person, Namely Me, Could Be a Beginner for 16 Years

Is that really me at 16, in December, seriously posing in front of the Christmas tree?  Who took that picture?  My sister.  I'm surprised it came out as clear as it did given that she must have been laughing. My dedication to the sport as a 'Recreational' bodybuilder is not in question.  Health and fitness has been part of my life for twenty years.  And what I'm about to tell you is the truth, and nothing but the truth. While my story is unique to me, I sound just like thousands of frustrated people on the quest become better. What person just starts...

7 Simple Steps to Beginning Bodybuilding

Although my hypothetical letter would be written for me, I'm certain that the 7 steps in that letter would apply just as well to you or to any other teenager or beginner who is frustrated and at a point (early in their training education), where they would waste a lot of time if they started heading down the wrong path. I wasted so many years making so many training and diet mistakes, that I hope by sharing these 7 steps with you, that you will get started on the right track and make great gains right from the beginning. How Do I Know if Intermittent Fasting is Right for Me?

If you have considered fasting for weight loss (sometimes known as Intermittent Fasting) here are some general thoughts on fasting regarding body composition. I'll be the first to admit I've not reviewed very much of the science behind this concept or read any books on the subject of fasting. That being said, I think it's worthy of a discussion for those interested in the concept.

Holiday Fitness Challenge: Crazy or Genius?

By now, almost everyone in the online fitness space has heard of Tom Venuto's Burn the Fat Holiday Challenge. The gut reaction most people have when they hear about this for the first time is, "Isn't this the WORST time to start a fitness program?  Thanksgiving is just days away and most people gain fat over the holidays don't they?"  True. Most people do gain fat over the...

Thai Basil Chicken Stir-fry

Once again, this amazing meal comes from Metabolic Cooking and it's called Thai Basil Chicken Stir-Fry.  I've made quite a few meals from this cookbook and so far, this is my #1 pick.  A close second is Ginger Beef (not yet posted).  Describing food for me is difficult because by nature I am no chef!  My cooking skills in college were limited to Top Ramen.  I once ate an entire German Chocolate Cake for dinner. I've come a long way. :-) Without going into too much detail, having these type of resources at your disposal is a benefit to you, your family...
