Rest Between Sets and the Effects on Your Workout

rest between sets
Rest between sets should be 30 seconds to 5 minutes.  True or False? I'm sure by now you are well aware that rest between sets are just another variable you can manipulate depending on your overall objective (strength, muscle growth, endurance). What you may not be aware of is rest periods between sets have very different outcomes depending on your objective.   Improper use of rest between workouts can eventually lead to overtraining.  Here's the scoop...

Is 5 Sets of 5 All wrong for Gaining Muscle?

Ever wonder how many reps you should do to build muscle?  You've probably heard that 5x5 is superior.  Or the 8-12 rep range is optimal.  The Max-OT system by AST is geared for the 4-6 range for optimal muscle and strength gains. It's confusing and frankly, I have had luck and success with every range.  But it's worth further discussion. This new article is probably going to really irritate some of the strength coaches who told that you should ONLY lift weights in the 5 rep range... But then again, the author doesn't seem to care about THEM...

How Supermodels Keep Their Looks

Ever wonder how some supermodels can keep their shape all year?  There's lots of theories.  From hard work to plastic surgery to fad diets, not eating and crazy herbal supplements.  Maybe it's a little bit of all of that and then some.  Who knows.  But what I do know is that supermodels don't drink these shakes. Ordered by Calories: 5.  Baskin-Robbins Berry Pomegranate Banana Fruit Blast Smoothie (large) 1,020 calories 1.5 grams of fat 232 grams of sugar You gotta wonder if they put Pomegranate in there for a later marketing ploy to say it's healthy because of the anti-oxidant properties.  Just my guess. 4.  Cosi Gigante...

Basic Premise of Critical Thinking

"The bottom line, and a basic premise of critical thinking, is that authorities don't matter, the facts do.  All information must be analyzed critically and never accepted blindly.  If the advice comes from people you respect and admire, then listen, but still verify." ~ Tom Venuto; page 26-27 of The Body Fat Solution Frankly... I'm finding too many quotes like this in a pre-release copy of Tom Venuto's The Body Fat Solution.  And while I'm not personally looking to burn excess fat this year, it's the book of 2009 that needed to be written in a world that desperately needs an...

Three Ways to Cut Your Grocery in an Economic Crisis

Most people I know are freaked out by the latest rounds of economic news.  Our current situation has been labeled as the next Great Depression, the lame-stream media gets more hyped up by the second, and it seems that on any street corner, you'll unavoidable hear a conversion between two or more people who are frozen with fear like Chicken Little in the Sky is Falling. There is no denying that the economic crisis creates real world problems both financially and mentally for a massive number of people.  So what's my role? I've put myself forward as a fitness authority, so how...

10 Reasons You Are Not a Successful Bodybuilder

Most people want to be successful. They set goals and then the hard work begins to reach those goals. But the real question is what is success? Bodybuilding success can mean different things to different people. For example, my friend Jeff Anderson doesn't define success as himself being some mass monster. He defines it thru the e-mails, phone calls and letters he receives from clients that are thrilled with their results from the programs he creates. Other bodybuilders are focused on their own personal progress and only consider something a success if they win a bodybuilding show. Again, another defines success...
